The successful detection and mapping of three historical supernova remnants, in the 10 to 100 micron band, using the Infrared Astronomical Satellite, are reported. The model of Draine (1981) for shock-heated dust emission is discussed and extended for application to young SNRs in moderate density environments. Analytical expressions based on numerical simulations are presented, describing the pre-adiabatic dynamics of SNRs. The body of existing observational data for Tycho, Kepler, and Cas A is critically reassessed, yielding refined distance estimates, dynamical ages, X-ray emitting masses and geometrical models. Accurate integrated fluxes at 12, 25, 60, and 100 microns and high resolution images of these SNRs are presented. The images are compared with ones of identical resolution at X-ray, optical and radio wavelengths. It is established that the infrared emission is in all cases associated with shock-heated dust originating in the interstellar medium. The spectral form and intensity of emission are consistent with the model predictions.
