The results of some experiments are presented in which hot-film probe measurements of steady velocities in a large-scale mercury flow in the presence of a strong magnetic field were made. Details of a probe calibration procedure which takes into account the effect of a magnetic field on free convection are described and the effect of unclean fluid, temperature variations and magnetoresistance are discussed. It is shown that despite these inherent problems successful results can be readily obtained.
