Midwinter warmings, circulation anomalies in the stratosphere, are discussed. As an example of the synoptic evolution of such a warming, radiances obtained by Nimbus 6 are given and analyzed. Results confirm that these warmings are forced by the planetary waves of the troposphere. The variability of the planetary waves and of their vertical structure is reflected by the large interannual variability of the stratosphere during the northern winters. It is suggested to monitor this interannual variability, which has not yet been explained, and to measure the vertical temperature distribution of the stratosphere, preferably with the same instrument, continuously over several years.
