Observational evidence against the proposal that some or all extensive air showers are caused by relativistic dust grains rather than atomic nuclei is summarized. Measurements of the depth of the maximum in the transition curve for vertical showers as a function of particle energies are shown to be consistent with the assumption that typical air showers are produced by individual nuclei. It is also noted that no large, well measured shower event has ever shown characteristics indicating that the primary particle was anything other than a nucleus.
