The paper calculates the relative strengths of hydrogen emission lines for conditions appropriate to broad emission-line regions in quasars and Seyfert galaxies. Consideration is given to emission from optically thick slabs having electron densities of 10 to the 8th to 10 to the 11th per cu cm and a temperature of about 15,000 K. The sensitivity of computed line ratios to changes in the fundamental slab parameters is examined. Finally, it is suggested that the recent discovery of several quasars having little or no emission in L alpha can be understood as examples of high density emission-line regions in which recombinations and line emission are suppressed by collisional ionization.
