Scientific paper

The paper reports on a survey of NGC 2685 in the 21-cm line of neutral hydrogen in the velocity range of +730 to +1030 km/s using the Westerbork radio synthesis telescope. The results are discussed in terms of accretion of intergalactic gas. It is suggested that the outer ring may be quite old or possibly a remnant of the formation period of the galaxy. Finally, it is proposed that the helix-like structure may be the result of a much more recent accretion event.
