The problem of inertial modes in the solar convection zone is considered. Of particular interest from the point of view of observations are slow, nearly geostrophic modes, for which approximate explicit dispersion relationships are given. Typical properties of these modes are discussed, and their relationship to Rossby waves is clarified. Possible applications to solar phenomena are mentioned.
