Non-axisymmetric accretion disks around compact objects can lead to X-ray variability. Low-frequency Quasi-Periodic Oscillations (LFQPOs), observed in X-ray binaries, have not yet been explained, but could in fact be the result of non-axisymmetry due to spiral waves or blobs in the disk. Here we provide a unified analytic formula that characterizes the non-axisymmetric disk height profile for both spiral waves and blobs. We then study the influence of these structures on the observed flux by relating the height to the local disk temperature and include the important shadowing effects. We predict the observed timing properties and apply the results to LFQPOs, inferring the key features of the non-axisymmetric structure required to match the LFQPO observations.
