A brief review is presented of our current understanding of the chemical
evolution of the Milky Way and, in particular, of the solar
neighbourhood and the disc of our Galaxy, in the light of recent
theoretical and observational results. We explore the implications of
this understanding for studies of `cosmic chemical evolution'.
