Direct photographs of the powerful radio galaxy Pictor A show a
relatively sharp nucleus but otherwise reveal no spiral or filamentary
structure. Spectrophotometric scans reveal exceptionally broad wings in
both permitted and forbidden emission lines, the full width of H-alpha
at zero intensity being approximately 0.08 c.
