The paper discusses 11 periodic comets that were discovered between 1881 and 1918 and have never been seen since, largely because their orbits were poorly determined at the time of their first close approach to Jupiter. General characteristics of periodic comets are reviewed along with the procedure for determining orbits, and factors are examined which are likely to affect the validity of a modern prediction for the return of the comets under consideration. Orbital elements are tabulated for the discovery apparition and the next predicted return of each comet. It is noted that a component of one of the missing comets, P/Taylor 1916 I, was recently recovered after 61 years and nine revolutions since its discovery apparition.
