The thermal history of Venus is reviewed in connection with surface-temperature data obtained by the Venera probes. The initial thermal state of the planet is examined along with its internal structure, the nature of heat transport in its core and mantle, as well as the abundances and redistribution of the long-lived radioactive elements U, Th, and K within it. The contributions of various energy sources to heating of the interior are considered, particularly that due to dissipation of solar tidal energy. The depth distribution of temperature in the upper layers of Venus (to a depth of 700 km) at the present time is obtained from a computer-aided solution to the heat equation for a spherically symmetric model in which density, heat release, heat conduction, heat capacity, and the melting point of interior matter are all functions of distance from the planet's center.
