An examination of the morphology of caves, dolines, and sinkholes in both limestone and non-limestone regions leads to the suggestion that in some cases such features are formed by processes which do not primarily depend on erosion by water. It is hypothesized that caves and dolines may be opened as a direct consequence of the expansion of the earth's mantle. As the lithostatic pressures on the moon are considerably weaker than on this planet, such processes might be expected to play a greater role there in the formation of geological features, and should be considered together with meteorite impacts and vulcanism as possible mechanisms for the formation of lunar relief.
