The design drivers for a lunar far-side very low frequency array (VLFA) for astronomical observations from the luanr surface are listed. The VLFA must be designed to gather data at frequencies of interest. It must achieve the desired sensitivity to small changes in brightness and also capability to respond to wide ranges of brightness. It must achieve spatial and temporal resolution to meet the needs of the community. A reasonable field of view of an appropriate part of the sky must be achieved. The operational mode must be selected whether it be scanning or aperture synthesis.
