The Radio Astronomy Explorer program of the late 1960s and early 1970s represents mankind's first attempt to perform low frequency radio astronomy measurements from above the Earth's ionosphere with a dedicated set of instruments. Those lessons learned that have direct application to a possible lunar low frequency radio observatory will be presented here.
