The motion of an ejected nova shell through circumstellar matter is considered as a mechanism for thermal X-ray continuum production. Assuming that a nova system is fueled by steady mass transfer and that circumstellar matter is built up at a given rate, calculations are performed for two simplified alternatives for the circumstellar matter distribution at distances that are large in comparison with the orbital radius. The X-ray production efficiency is estimated, an expression is obtained for the expected X-ray light curve, and it is shown that an expanding nova shell can generate a circumstellar X-ray power that is large enough to be potentially relevant to the transient source A0620-00. The results are compared with observations of Nova Cygni 1975 and A0620-00; it is concluded that recurrent novae are the most likely X-ray source candidates among novae.
