Galaxies: Reference Systems, Galaxies: Proper Motions
Scientific paper
CCD astrometry offers the possibility of measuring proper motions for the nearest galaxies, either from the ground or using HST, in only 5 - 10 years. An inertial reference frame, however, is needed against which to measure these motions. The authors have therefore been using the La Silla telescopes to seek QSOs behind several of the nearest satellite galaxies of the Milky Way, using a variety of techniques.
