It is noted that there is a relation between the intensity ratio of H-alpha to forbidden N II emission and age, as evidenced by diameter or expansion velocity, for supernova remnants in the Galaxy. This paper proposes that the observed variation in the cited intensity ratio is caused by nitrogen returned to the gaseous phase from icy grain mantles destroyed in the vicinity of a supernova event. Three possible destruction mechanisms are analyzed: sputtering, sublimation within the shock wave, and sublimation by the initial radiation pulse. Semiempirical theoretical curves of intensity ratio vs expansion velocity are plotted for two grain-size distributions and are found to reproduce observations well for grain sublimation by supernova radiation, provided the power of the exponent in the grain-size distribution is of the order of 2.
