Identifications and relative intensities of emission lines observed in the star MWC 17 are presented. Some physical processes in the envelope are discussed, in particular self-absorption in hydrogen and helium and excitation of Fe II lines. Analysis of line-intensity ratios indicate that the emission originates in an envelope with a mass of at least 0.06 solar mass, density of 5 million per cu cm or larger, temperature of around 8000 K, and a radius of the order of 1000 AU, illuminated by an O9 I or earlier-type star.
