An attempt is made to obtain a good system of galactic magnitudes for use in calculating distance moduli from the diameter-luminosity relation. The magnitude data of Holmberg (1958) and Zwicky's catalogs of galaxies and clusters of galaxies (1961-68) are employed, and various perturbing effects in Zwicky's system are investigated on the assumption that Holmberg's magnitudes are free of perturbations, have no scale, and exhibit zero point error. Perturbations examined for a sample of 259 galaxies include a surface-brightness effect, an effect due to the number of the volume of Zwicky's catalog (the NV effect), a declination effect, and a magnitude effect. Statistical analysis of the sample reveals that the brightness and NV effects are most significant and that the Zwicky magnitudes over the range from 4 to 14.5 must be corrected for these effects.
