By photoelectric UBV photometry, photographs in UVR, and spectrophotometric measurements the extraordinary nature of R 136, central star in the 30 Doradus nebula, is demonstrated. Some evidence is presented for the variation of intensity and of spectral lines on time scales of 2-3 days. An upper limit of 0.12 is given for the forbidden N II/H-alpha intensity ratio of this object. The emitted energy in H-alpha is 3 by 10 to the 36th power erg/s, and the mean H-alpha line halfwidth 6 A.
