The different criteria used for classification of meteorites are presented. Meteorites are divided into three main groups, stone, iron, and lithosiderites, which can be subdivided into different classes and sub-classes in accordance with chemical, mineralogical, and petrographical criteria. Thus, the stones comprise chondrites, the most frequent meteorites (93 % of observed falls), and achondrites. The chemical variations between the different categories of chondrites suggest that the solar nebula may have undergone some chemical fractionation before the parent bodies were formed. The subsequent thermal history of the parent bodies may explain the formation of achondrites. The solidification ages of meteorites, based on the Rb-Sr and U, Th-Pb methods, converge between 4.4 and 4.7 billion years. Meteorites, therefore, are the most ancient closed systems known.
