A civilization is defined as an intelligent society capable of revealing itself using means detectable at interstellar distances. Civilizations are classified according to energy consumption: (1) planetary (e.g. earth's) (2) entire star, and (3) galactic. Although it is not known whether stars other than our sun have planetary systems, theoretical hypotheses on the possibility of intelligent life existing elsewhere are presented. Early attempts at detecting electromagnetic emissions from outer space have revealed emissions from pulsars, space masers, and space clouds. The most promising approach is the detection of infrared radiation at wavelengths of 3-60 cm. However no phenomena have yet been discovered that could not be explained by natural processes.
