The evolution of neutron stars is determined by the evolution of their magnetic fields. The observational evidence for field evolution is presented. Recent observations suggest that the magnetic field of a neutron star initially decays with a timescale of a few million years, but becomes virtually constant at late times. Theoretical models for such a field evolution are discussed.
