A straightforward and simplified derivation of the Antonov instability and gravothermal catastrophe is obtained by explicitly solving the zero eigenvalue equation associated with the second variation of the entropy. This solution also makes it possible to study the nature of the mode which triggers the instability. It turns out that this mode has a core-halo structure.
