Results are reported for noble-gas analyses of lunar soil samples taken from areas exposed to and shielded from solar-wind-accelerated atmospheric ions. The concentrations of cosmic-ray-produced components are calculated for Ne-21, Kr-78, Xe-124, and Xe-126. Exposure ages are computed, and the elemental and isotopic abundances of trapped He, Ne, Ar, Kr, and Xe are determined. The grain-size dependence of the trapped gases is analyzed, and a model involving a grain-size-dependent trapped-gas Ar-40/Ar-36 ratio is proposed. It is found that the shadowed soils are enriched in volatile and semivolatile elements relative to the exposed soils, and it is suggested that reaccelerated lunar ions may have contributed to the observed excess of more volatile elements.
