Nebular emission-line ratios are vital diagnostics of ionizing stellar populations and metallicities in distant galaxies. However, we rely heavily on photoionization models to interpret observed nebular emission-line ratios; empirical calibrations using ordinary H II regions with known properties have been lacking. Here we present such empirical calibrations and evaluate nebular diagnostics, based on detailed observations of H II regions by ourselves and others. We examine diagnostics for stellar effective temperature T*, namely the radiation softness parameter η' and our suggested [Ne III]λ3869/Hβ. We also reexamine nebular abundance determinations; we evaluate and calibrate the S23 and S234 sulfur abundance paramters.
