It is widely accepted that the wavelength dependence of the interstellar extinction curve is quite different in the direction of the Orion Nebula. This has usually been explained by modification of the size distribution of the dust by processes tied to the hot ionizing stars. This interpretation seems consistent with arguments that the dust causing the extinction is within the nebula or at least close to it; however, that assumption is incorrect. There is now a substantial body of evidence showing that the nebula is not optically thick in visual wavelengths and that almost all of the extinction of the nebula and the Trapezium stars arises in neutral foreground material. Although not lying within the immediate environment of the hottest Trapezium stars, this material is associated with the Orion complex, so that the conditions there are sufficiently unusual to modify the grains and/or their size distribution.
