Excitation of permitted lines by fluorescence can be more important than recombination for some ions and atoms in ionized nebulae. Continuum and line absorption can excite resonant transitions that produce subsequent cascade transitions in the visible and ultraviolet with a higher rate than the recombination rate. The prediction of fluorescent line intensities is more complicated than the prediction of recombination line intensities because they depend heavily on poorly known nebular parameters like the local UV field above the Lyman limit and the velocity or turbulent fields. We present a study of NII and OI lines that are excited by fluorescence in ionized nebulae and compare them with observations.
