A remarkable paleohydrological pattern is developed in the great system of Pleistocene spillways connecting the Black, Caspian, and Aral Sea basins. Expansion of the paleolakes occupying these basins in the Pleistocene might be attributed to progressive changes in water-balance parameters, including temperature, precipitation, runoff, and evaporation. This explanation is emphasized by Chepalyga (1984). However, evidence for cataclysmic flood erosion in the spillways indicates that very rapid, massive influxes of water played a major role in their origin.
