The detection of NLR emission offset by 0.6 kpc from the previously known active nucleus of the Seyfert 2 galaxy IC 5063 is reported. The off-centered NLR shows unusually broad line profiles (FWHM = 900 km/sec) while the profile widths of the central NLR do not exceed 350 km/sec. The ionized gas outside the nucleus traces a symmetric and smooth rotation curve. There is no evidence for a high mass concentration outside the geometrical and kinematical center. This excludes the model of a binary NLR and suggests scattered light as the origin of the off-centered NLR. The gas close to the nucleus shows spectroscopic indications of counter-rotation. The observed peculiar properties may be due to a dramatic recent merger event which resulted in the peculiar gas motions and exceptionally strong obscuration and scattering effects.
