The paper presents the results of the application of a method for reducing photographic images of Saturn by microphotometric scanning in two-dimensions along lines parallel to the major axis of the rings followed by averaging of the intensities perpendicular to these lines, with correction for curvature of the rings. The result is a smoothed photometric profile of the rings. A profile obtained from a negative in yellow light is shown, in which the elimination of granulation effects is nearly total. A significant detail showing the sensitivity of the method is the sharp depression in intensity while passing across the border between the C and D rings, which cannot be attributed to any photographic or diffused light effects. It would appear that if the Pioneer and Mariner probes are to cross the rings of Saturn, they would encounter less risk of collision with particles in the division separating the C and D rings.
