The extinction data and distance moduli of 280 stars observed in the Coalsack region (Seidensticker, 1989) are used to construct A(v)(m0-M)-diagrams in an attempt to determine the distance and morphology of this dust cloud. Evidence for two overlapping clouds at distances of 188 and 243 pc, respectively, is found. It is suggested that the Coalsack is not a single sheet of dust, but rather a conglomerate of overlapping dark clouds.
