The detection and mapping of molecular gas in elliptical and lenticular galaxies using the CO(J = 1-0) and (J = 2-1) emission lines as tracers of the gas is discussed. Particular attention is given to the global properties of the molecular content of early-type galaxies as compared to a sample of spiral galaxies compiled from published data. The first results of the molecular cloud content of early type galaxies show that these galaxies contain a cold interstellar gas component of typically 10 to the 7th to 10 to the 9th solar masses of H2.
