Chromium, Chromium Oxide, Magnesiochromite, Phases: Interstellar, Ureyite
Scientific paper
Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies were performed on three fragments from the Orgueil (CI) meteorite in order to identify Cr-bearing phases. In addition to chromite (FeCr2O4) three chromium-bearing minerals were found: magnesiochromite (MgCr2O4), ureyite (NaCrSi2O6), and chromiumoxide (Cr2O3). All phases occur as well defined single grains of excellent crystallinity. While magnesiochromite and chromiumoxide are pure in composition, most ureyite grains are solid solutions between diopside and ureyite. We assume these Cr-bearing phases to be potential carrier phases for isotopic anomalous chromium.
