We have performed an extensive spectroscopic study of various members of the WO Wolf-Rayet class and of their nebulae. We show that the WO stars are evolved objects and that signatures of successive ejections of material with different chemical composition can be found in the nebulae surrounding these stars. We also argue that there is no compelling evidence to support the present classification that puts the WO stars in a separate class from WC stars.
