Using long slit spectroscopy we have studied the stellar population and reddening gradients inside the central regions of the nearby spiral galaxy M81. Observational data are analyzed using a new and very powerful mathematical method dedicated to the determination of the best solution (among the many local solutions) in the stellar population synthesis problem. The basic elements to construct the synthetic spectra are taken from a data base of star spectra. We will show the ability of this method to define detailed stellar populations and to differentiate between age and metallicity effects. The stellar population gradient within the central 25'' of M81 is thus quantified and the uncertainties will be discussed.
