The majority of galaxies in the Universe belong to small clusters, of which the Local Group is a typical example. The present discussion will deal with (1) the membership of the Local Group, (2) distances to individual Local Group members, (3) the characteristics and evolution of the more than thirty individual galaxies that are now known to belong to the Local Group, and (4) with the most important Group characteristics, such as its stability, evolution and luminosity function. Particular emphasis will be placed on discussion of the morphological evolution of individual Group members and its relation to environmental factors. A more extended version of this paper will be published as The Galaxies of the Local Group, Cambridge University Press, 1999.
