We discuss the life cycle of dust from its formation in the outflows of evolved stars to its inclusion in protoplanetary disks around young stars, as observed by ISO. The combination of ISO data with laboratory spectra of stardust samples and of cosmic dust analogues proves to be a powerful tool to determine the composition of dust in space, and reveals a remarkable degree of variation in dust properties observed in circumstellar and interstellar conditions.
