M100 is one of the largest spiral galaxies in the Virgo Cluster, its true size being similar to that of the Andromeda Galaxy, M31. It lies in Coma Berenices, completing a triangle around the star 6 Comae Berenices with M98 and M99, all of which were discovered by Mechain on the same fruitful night in March 1781.
