M96 is a spiral galaxy in Leo, lying about two-thirds of a degree to the east of M95. Like that galaxy, it was discovered in March 1781 by Mechain and was then checked by Messier before inclusion in his catalog. Visually, it appears rounded with a bright center and traces of spiral arms; it is classified as type Sa. A supernova of type Ia erupted within it in 1998. M96 lies at a similar distance ...
