M49 is the brightest elliptical galaxy in Virgo. It was discovered by
Messier on 19 February 1771 and was the first member of the huge Virgo
cluster of galaxies to be recorded, later followed by two more giant
ellipticals (M60, M87). It is less dense than M87 and more yellow
overall than most galaxies in the cluster....
