M48 is another `missing object' (see also M47). The open cluster in Hydra was recorded by Messier on 19 February 1771 but an error in the data reduction resulted in a wrong position. The error was cleared up and the correct object identified by T F Morris in 1959. In the meantime, the cluster was independently rediscovered by Caroline Herschel.
