The impulsive excitation of ULF waves are studied using a three-dimensional dipole magnetosphere model in which the magnetosphere is assumed to be axisymmetric. Wave spectra and coupling are examined at different meridians, and a two-dimensional wave energy distribution map is constructed. The effects of the longitudinal width of the source region on the compressional and transverse wave excitations and their coupling are described. It is shown that the relatively narrow impulse is expected to result in many azimuthal eigenstates, so that the spectrum becomes relatively broad-banded and the excited ULF waves become a mixture of many different global compressional modes.
