Active Galactic Nuclei
Scientific paper
Traditionally active galactic nuclei (AGN) have been divided into categories like Seyfert galaxies, quasars, BL Lac objects, etc., based on optical spectral characteristics and radio properties. However, it is becoming increasingly clear that these observed characteristics are strongly aspect-dependent because AGN do not emit isotropically. A promising avenue of AGN research is the unification of apparently disparate classes of AGN. The recent STScI workshop on Grand Unified Theories (GUTs) of AGN clarified several possible unification schemes and stimulated ideas about how to proceed. Here the authors review the present state of these unified schemes.
