The realistic simulation of a binary neutron star coalescence is a daunting problem, involving many branches of theoretical physics. Its solution will require the application of expertise in astrophysics (neutron star structure), nuclear physics (realistic equations of state), and general relativity (gravitational wave extraction, slicing conditions), as well as numerical and computational techniques (shock capturing methods, efficient codes). In this talk, I report on the state of the work done by the grand challenge project "A Multipurpose, 3D Code for Relativistic Astrophysics and Gravitational Wave Astronomy: Application to Coalescing Neutron Star Binaries", funded by NASA. Specifically, I report on the coupling of the general relativity evolution code CACTUS and a high resolution shock capturing (HRSC) hydrodynamics code we have developed. Included in the talk will be computational methods, code tests, and resent results.
