Hydrodynamic simulations of cosmic structure formation lead to a simple physical picture of the Lyman-alpha forest. Low column density hydrogen absorption arises in the diffuse intergalactic medium, and a quasar absorption spectrum provides a non-linear, one-dimensional map of the density field along the line of sight. Analyses of Lyman-alpha forest spectra can determine the amplitude and shape of the primordial mass power spectrum and constrain cosmological quantities such as the baryon density parameter, the Hubble constant, and the cosmological constant. I will outline this approach to determining cosmological parameters and present results from recent observational analyses.
