Proton-induced nuclear reactions occur under the influence of the smallest possible Coulomb barrier among charged-particle processes and, therefore, determine the nucleosynthesis of elements in a variety of stellar objects. This talk will concentrate on hydrogen burning under extreme stellar temperature conditions. At very low temperatures (T_9≈0.04) proton capture reactions are of key importance for the interpretation of recently observed Na, Mg and Al abundances on the surfaces of globular cluster red giant stars which are among the oldest objects in the universe. Recent efforts to determine the relevant nuclear cross sections at low bombarding energies will be discussed. At very high temperatures (T_9>=0.3) occuring in accreting binary star systems (novae and x-ray bursts) hydrogen will burn explosively. In this case most reactions of astrophysical importance involve unstable nuclear targets. The relevant cross sections either have to be measured directly using radioactive ion beams or can be estimated from results of traditional nuclear spectroscopy measurements. Recent efforts to improve our understanding of nuclear reaction networks describing hydrogen burning in explosive events will be presented.
