Astrophysical cyclotron lines in X-ray pulsar spectra result from the absorption and/or emission of photons by electrons in Landau orbits in the strong magnetic fields near the surfaces of neutron stars. Observations of these lines directly measure extremely intense magnetic ( ~ 10^12 G) fields, and their properties have implications for magnetic field decay in neutron stars and X-ray emission processes and the behavior of matter in strong magnetic fields. With the launches of the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) and the BeppoSAX satellites, astronomers have two powerful new tools for studying cyclotron lines. Their sensitivity over a broad energy band combined with good energy resolution make these satellites ideal for the discovery and study of cyclotron lines in these accreting neutron stars. In fact, cyclotron lines have recently been discovered in two pulsars, and new results are forthcoming on other, well known sources. In this talk, I review recent results from RXTE and BeppoSAX and discuss their implications for our understanding of the X-ray pulsars and their environments.
