The essential steps in the construction of the Fifth Fundamental Catalog (FK5), which is a revised version of its predecessor FK4, are described together with the motives for the FK5 construction. The most important results obtained in the revision of FK4 are reported. It is noted that, starting with 1988, the 'Apparent Places of Fundamental Stars' will be entirely based on the FK5 and will include the systematic and individual corrections FK5-FK4.
